Hello, I'm Breanna Higgins, a dedicated local mother of two wonderful children and a passionate advocate for high-quality and equitable education. I grew up in Newburyport and live here with my husband, Tom- we love this community. I currently serve on the School Committee and bring a unique perspective as both a parent and an education policy expert. With an Ed.D. in Education Policy, I have honed a deep understanding of the intricacies that shape effective learning environments. My journey as a mother has only deepened my commitment to ensuring that every child in our community receives the best possible education.

Campaign Platform
As a member of the School Committee, I'm dedicated to promoting strong early literacy practices, ensuring students with unique learning challenges have equitable learning opportunities, and that our high school students have multiple options to explore their interests and strengths to determine their path post-graduation. I aim to continue that focus if elected for the next 4 year term. It is a privilege to serve the students of our community.
My Focus Areas:
- BUILD A FOUNDATION OF EXCELLENCE
- Thriving schools do the basics exceptionally well, beginning with early literacy. All Newburyport students should be exposed to grade-level and engaging lessons to build foundational literacy and math skills.
- FOCUS ON OUTCOMES
- As a school community, we must look at data to understand how all our students are performing academically and set ambitious goals to continuously improve. Without a clear focus on outcomes, we cannot serve all students well.
- PREPARE STUDENTS FOR TOMORROW
- Throughout students’ K-12 journey, they should be exposed to a diversity of experiences (e.g., arts, athletics, world languages, field trips) to support the growth of their passions and strengths as well as provide them innovative opportunities (e.g., dual enrollment and innovation pathways) to be prepared for college and career experiences.
- BUDGET SUSTAINABLY
- As the district strives to meet its goals, we must do so in a way that reflects a responsible and sustainable use of community resources.

I have spent my career advocating for rigorous and equitable educational experiences, including as a teacher, researcher, consultant, and manager of school improvement. These experiences have prepared me for a role on the School Committee. I understand the key role of the school committee to oversee budgetary decisions and hold the superintendent to a high standard of success for Newburyport students.
